- Continues CHEM 2315.
- Extends the study of functional groups commonly found in organic compounds, further emphasizing conceptual mastery of the relationship between structure and reactivity.
- Introduces structural identification of organic compounds using contemporary spectroscopic methods such as IR, MS, and NMR.
- Other topics include structure and reactivity of conjugated and aromatic systems, the chemistry of ethers and epoxides, and the chemistry of carbonyl-containing compounds including aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and carboxylic acid derivatives.
- Offers students an opportunity to develop skills in planning multistep syntheses using the retrosynthesis approach and proposing mechanisms for chemical transformations.
