- Studies how to use a geographic information system (GIS).
- Explores the practical application of GIS to support scientific and social inquiry, analysis, and decision making.
- Topics include spatial data collection; data accuracy and uncertainty; cartographic principles and data visualization; geographic analysis; and legal, economic, and ethical issues associated with using GIS.
- Investigates case studies from geology, environmental science, urban planning, architecture, social studies, and engineering.
- Provides extensive hands-on experience with a leading commercial GIS software package.
- Offers students an opportunity to conceive their own research problem that can be addressed using GIS and reach conclusions that are summarized in a professional report.
- Students who do not meet course prerequisites may seek permission of instructor.
