- Introduces the social, cultural, and political dynamics that surround social movements, both historically and in the contemporary world.
- Emphasizes theory and research on national and transnational social movements, including studies of revolutions and political upheavals, racial justice and demands for civil and human rights, movements for gender equality, and other instances of movements for social and political change.
- Focuses on how structural factors shape social movement emergence and development and how social movements in turn shape the structure of societies.
